The President of EKIF was invited and attended the transnational seminar "Europe's new Mediterranean Reality: Migration and Asylum in Cyprus, Malta and Greece," which was jointly organised by the European Parliament Offices in Cyprus, Malta and Greece and the Press and Information Office. The Seminar was held at the Hilton Cyprus Hotel in Nicosia,      7 October 2011. The Keynote Speaker was the Minister of Interior, Mr Neoklis Sylikiotis. The participants were welcomed by the Head of the EP Office in Cyprus and the Director of the Press and Information Office in Nicosia. MEPS from Malta, Greece and Cyprus attended the Seminar as well as Government Officials, representatives of NGOs and the media.

Within the context of the forthcoming Cypriot EU Presidency in the second half of 2012, the Director of the European Institute for Gender Equality (EIGE), Ms Virginija Langbakk, and members of EIGE staff visited Cyprus from 4-5 July 2011.
EIGE is a European agency that supports the EU and its Member States in their efforts to promote gender equality, to fight discrimination based on sex and to raise awareness about gender equality issues.
Within the framework of meetings that EIGE staff held with Government officials and research organisations that support gender equality, they had a meeting with Members of the EKIF Board: the President of the Cyprus Gender Research Centre (EKIF), Dr Despina Charalambidou-Solomi, the Vice–president, Ms Chrystalla Maouri, the Treasurer, Dr Natassa Economidou-Stavrou and Dr Danae Lordou-Kaspari on 4 July 2011. The two parties agreed on establishing closer communication and discussed possibilities for future co-operation.

The President of the Cyprus Gender Research Centre (EKIF), Dr Despina Charalambidou-Solomi, was invited and attended a seminar co-organised by the Office of the European Parliament in Cyprus, the High Court of the Cyprus Republic and the Pancyprian Lawyers Association on 4 July 2011 at the premises of the Bank of Cyprus (Agia Paraskevi) on Trasfficking in Persons and Legal Framework in Cyprus.

The Cyprus Gender Research Centre (EKIF) was represented by the Vice-president, Ms Chrystalla Maouri, at the informative meeting organised by the Research Promotion Foundation (IPE) at their Offices in Nicosia on 20 April 2011. Fourteen women organisations attended the meeting at which they were informed of opportunities of funding for research projects on issues of gender equality through IPE and of the activities of the Helsinki Group on Women in Science, which is represented in Cyprus by IPE.

The Cyprus Gender Research Centre (ΕΚΙΦ) issued a PRESS RELEASE (ΑΝΑΚΟΙΝΩΣΗ) on 11 April 2011 highlighting the fact  that three parliamentary parties have reduced the number of their women candidates for the forthcoming Parliamentary Elections  in May 2011 compared to the number of their women candidates for the 2006 Parliamentary Elections.

The President of EKIF, Dr Dena Charalambidou-Solomi  was invited and attended a Conference on The Changing Facets of Trafficking in Human Beings: Challenges and Policy Developments on Wednesday, 6 April 2011 organised by the Representation of the European Commission in Cyprus, the Embassy of the United States of America in Cyprus and the British High Commission in Cyprus which was held at the Chateau Status.

On the occasion of Women's Day, the President of EKIF, Dr Dena Charalambidou-Solomi was invited by Ms Androulla Kaminara, Head of the European Commission Representation in Cyprus to a luncheon at the Chateau Status to celebrate the solidarity and importance of Cypriot women.

The President of the Republic invited the President and  Members of the Board of Directors of EKIF to the Presidential Palace for a Reception on the occasion of Women's Day,  8 March 2011. The President of EKIF and the Member of the Board, Dr Voula Hadgipanagiotou attended.

The President of EKIF, Dr Despina Solomi,  was invited by the Parliamentary Committee of Equal Opportunities between Men and Women and attended the meeting on Research and Gender in Cyprus  - Progress and Challenge. The President informed the Parliamentary Committee of the views of EKIF on the issue of research and gender both orally and in writing.

She also informed the Parliamentary Committee of the current research project of EKIF entitled "Mapping the Research Landscape in Cyprus through the Gender Perspective." This project aims to

  • examine whether there is equal participation of men and women in the main research centres in the academic, public and private sectors in Cyprus
  • highlight the reasons why women are underrepresented in research
  • identify the measures and policies that need to be implemented in order to encourage more women to choose a career in research
  • strengthen the role of women in decision making bodies in the research area
